ABOUT CHARLIE

ABOUT CHARLIE

My name is Charlie.  I was purchased on February 23, 1937 at the Los Altos Garage in Los Altos, California by Charles H. Mohr.  Upon the passing of Mr. Mohr, I was acquired from his estate by his niece, Barbara Tyler, in the early 1960s and was used as her main means of transportation for a few years until I was parked when she purchased a new car in 1964.

With lack of activity, my condition deteriorated over the years.  In 1984, Barbara arranged to have Ernie LeHouillier in Lake County, California perform a three-year ‘body off’ restoration to bring me back to original condition and color.   The restoration was completed in time for the 50th anniversary celebration of the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge.  I was one of the one hundred featured cars (I was number 27) in the grand parade.  I turned 76,500 actual miles on the bridge during the parade.

Throughout the following 24 years, I participated in many shows, parades and special events.  I graced the pages of the Oakland Tribune’s Wheels section in 1990, with Barbara and her husband Bert Stubblefield.  I could also be seen in a Maxwell House commercial in 1994.

When Barbara passed away in 2011, Bert continued to make sure I kept active.  Bert would drive me as often as possible, but as his cancer progressed, I spent more time in the garage.  Upon Bert’s death in July of 2013, I was left to Barbara & Bert’s grandson, Grant Ogren.  Barbara & Bert decided that Grant would be best suited to care for me.  In late October 2013, Grant traveled to Mill Valley, California, my home to prep me for shipment to Spokane, Washington, my new home.

Since my move to Spokane, I have become a ‘Sunday’ driver.  Grant tries to drive me weekly with trips to brunch, coffee or just a stroll around town.  I participated in my first Spokane PRIDE Parade on June 14, 2014. What a thrill.  Barbara & Bert would be proud.  Later in 2014, I was transported to Oak Harbor, WA for the wedding of Becky Ogren (Grant's niece) and Seth Miller.  It was an honor to be able to deliver the bride and her parents to the wedding site and then be able to take the bride & groom away from the reception.

In August of 2016, I participated in the making of the documentary Indian Summers: Nespelem Art Colony here in eastern Washington.   The documentary wasn’t about me or about cars, but I do feel I became the star.

Grant continues to show me each year in the local Mopars Unlimited show in June along with various other shows and parades.

In February 2018, I participated in a new show for The Discover Channel.  This show, so far not named, is basically like Antiques Road Show, but with cars.  I was shipped to/from LA and Grant joined me on February 22 for the taping of the show.  So many other beautiful cars/trucks/motorcycles & memorabilia were there being 'discovered' like me.  It was a fun trip, but happy to be back home in my garage with my family.

Features:
I was delivered with a radio, heater, fog lights, spotlight, clock, a ‘banjo’ style steering wheel and beauty rims around my hubcaps.  In 1937, some modern features were applied to the vehicle, for example, an electric automatic choke, radio antennas under the running boards (roadway antenna), equal pressure braking system to keep the vehicle level during braking, courtesy light over the ignition to light the ignition for key insertion at night, a built-in ashtray and a built-in lighter.

Technical data:
My engine is a 217.8 cubic inch, six cylinder in-line engine and is rated at 87-horsepower at 3600 RPM.  My electrical system is six-volts with a positive ground.
